Barefoot running; why is it good?

Hello fellow fruitys!

I have been running barefoot for over a year now, and absolutely love it! I love feeling my feet touching the Earth! Although, very often people tell me that it is not good for me. I never know how to respond to them.. What do you tell people?

  • The porters in the Himalaya have toughened their feet up enough to take on very tough conditions barefoot: below - barefoot teenage Sherpa carrying load for a western expedition:  http://www.panoramio.com/photo/2042840720428407.jpg

    • That's awesome

  • "In Christopher McDougal’s book “Born to Run” he tells of a small population in the Kalahari Desert of Africa that still practices a form of hunting known as persistence hunting. "

This is probably why we are upright, naked apes that can run very long distances barefoot.

  • I started using five fingers footwear for running like 2 motnhs ago and i injured one of my knees because i did the transition very fast. So i searched more info about them and one of the advantages i learned was the issue about the absortion of the impact to the ground. Using the heel, the impact affects knees, hips and back. Using the middel/front of the feet it doesnt affect that much. Plus, you're naturally forced to keep the back straight.

For me, this is one of the most important reasons.

    Good luck!

  • No problems. Just the initial muscle soreness when I was first starting out. Getting back into barefoot is a slow process. Having to retrain the body how to move when it had been in shoes for so long. I do use a sandal called zero shoes. Their awesome look em up online. They still allow the freedom of movement but with a little extra protection agains sharp stones and possible glass. For only 20 bucks US there well worth trying.
    • I never have too much trouble with the rocks, but i always seem to come home with splinters in my feet! Those suckers are never fun to get out! I looked up the sandals, they are definitely worth the consideration. I will have to try them out!

    • I would also check out Luna sandals. Might I recommend the hemp lacing. Very comfortable.
  • There was a doctor who was remarked how aboriginal children in Australia run around barefoot all day and they don't have any problems with their feet or arches - their feet are generally in perfect condition.  He said that by comparison Australians who wear shoes have much more problems with their feet.

    • Something to keep in mind! I always get told how bad it is for my feet, yet ive never had any problems! Thank you!

  • oh wow! what a fact!! I never would have even imagined that! Although, it does make sense! Thank you very much for the response! It is appreciated!
