I am starting my freshman year in college and need advice on how to fit in the fruits! Fruits are heavy and I am commuting from my home (2 hour train ride). It was easy in highschool because it was close by to home but now i dont think I can carry 3lbs of bananas with me every time I go to school. I love dates but they are too dry and I carry a 48oz jug of water on top of the fruit. Advice?

  • I know its not necessarily raw, but what about treck/naked bars or something similar? Dried fruit is also an excellent idea, and if there are nearby shops you could buy your fruit fresh everyday at lunch time to eat straight away.

Smoothies are good to pack in calories, but it can be bulky and heavy to carry round a large flask and not always practical to decant. You could have half of your meal as a smoothie however, and have bars/dried/fresh fruit as well.

Alternatively you could take oats and have them with water and dried/fresh fruit. They are light to carry and will fill you up.

If you have a locker you could keep a box of dates in there or a bunch of bananas so you will always have something handy if you get hungry.

As for water, I take a 500ml bottle and just fill it up regularly at the fountains, which works perfectly as it will never be heavy.

Hope you find a way that allows you to carry on being vegan at college :)
    • Agreed.  This is a little off diet, but it's more about finding a habit you can keep without going way off diet when you become hungry.

  • I would totally try and bring maybe two smoothies and maybe a few bananas and dates. I wouldn't want to be carrying around pounds of fruit either so I hope making smoothies could help!

  • Take datorade! not dry and really convenient to carry around.

  • I take a nice smoothie with me in a 2L bottle and take a stash of dates and a few bananas just in case I need something extra. We have a shop on campus that sells some fruit but the bananas are never ripe, but the also have apples. But you sure have a really long day with 2h there and back...

  • Maybe a different backpack could help. I use a hiking backpack with good support and lots of volume. I''m able to carry all by books, running shoes, fruit, and water for at least an hr. Check out the packs at sports stores like REI or Mountain Gear. I have a $130 Osprea daypack with hydration feature. its a bit expencive, but will last a long time, be used everyday for school, and can also be used for hikes. The lowest prices i saw were $99.
    • It's fun to think of him wearing this everyday, but certainly a viable option.

  • Dried bananas, perhaps? Or buying some at the college?

    • But then you wouldn't get ripe bananas/other fruit... You could store some stuff in a locker.

    • I had advised to eat raisins but now I realize that they indeed are the dried fruit version of grapes. Dried fruit is less advisable to eat in large quantity as we need the water in the fruit. I had hoped that he was able to let somebody buy bananas who lives close to the college. If they sell bananas at the college they would be expensive and it would most likely not be financially feasible to buy 3lbs of bananas.
