Is yoga enough exercise for the HCRV lifestyle?

Hello fellow yogis/yoginis-

I'm pretty new to HCRV style- as in I started yesterday- and I'm wondering if yoga is enough physical exercise ? At the moment I'm trying to build my daily practice, but I'm at 1 hour of Ashtanga for 5-6 days. I get exercise elsewhere too, but this has been the main source. Since Ashtanga is pretty rigorous, this has felt fairly physical in the past...

Do y'all think one should supplement a yoga practice with something else?

Thanks !!!

  • If you are doing hatha yoga then I would suggest to add strength training. But if you are doing ashtanga, power, yin, bikram (all with vinyasa flows) then that's all you need. If you do the poses right and add a couple of high intense intervals and some core work that's good. Try doing backbends (specifically wheel) and inversions (handstand, fore arm stand etc.,) to get your heart rate really going. I do yoga every day (I'm a yoga teacher) and it has helped me get a lean and toned body (also being a Hcrv helped lol)
  • I'd say so! It's a good idea to aim for 4-5 hours of exercise per week, 6 maximum. I practice advanced, high paced, challenging vinyasa and asthanga, and as long as you are getting your heart rate up every now and again in your practice you should be good to go! Any exercise is better than none! I mean, walking could be enough exercise for this lifestyle. :)

  • We discuss it a bit here on the 2nd page:

  • If you have a great Ashtanga yoga teacher, an hour a day should be more than enough!  Are you doing self study or going to a class?  A full Mysore routine is usually longer than an hour.  Are you just doing standing postures?

Sometimes when I'm super busy, I'll just do 5 sun salutations in the morning and that is enough to stay fit for me--but I'm 100% raw and have been for 4 years.  However, my ideal is to work out every day.  Not because I have to, but because I want to.  I do parkour/freerunning, ballet, and gymnastics.  I have gone periods, though, when I just focus on my yoga practice.

Do you feel like you are getting enough out of your yoga practice?  If not, try picking up the pace and adding more postures--just remember to focus on your breath!! :)

    • Ya it's Mysore and Im still building up my practice - so far it is an hour... I want to try and incorporate other stuff too though :)

  • Hi! =)

I've been practicing Ashtanga myself consistently for about 4 months now, until a couple weeks ago it's been my primary source of movement.

I would say an hour 5-6 days a week is plenty by itself, knowing the challenges Ashtanga offers first-hand.

That being said, it REALLY depends on YOUR goals.

As an example: for me personally I'm into freerunning, martial arts, and gymnastic type stuff, so adding in calisthenics with some intense cardio has been beneficial, even for my yoga!

It also heavily depends on your enthusiasm to train. Adding some variety can make things interesting, especially long-term.

    • wow thank you! I've been scared to get back into running b/c of flexibility... But it makes sense that "cross-training" so to speak would help any kind of practice :) Great info.
