What running winter wear to buy?

Hey, fruity-runners!

It's gonna be my new winter as a runner and I guess I won't get away without buying new apparel to get me through the cold NYC winter mornings...

I found out about a 3 days sale in a running store, had a look and seem to have good deals. The thing is I'm not sure as to what to buy. I have good shoes and... that's it! (Of course I have the shorts and tang-tops I've been wearing in summer, but that doesn't count any more...).

Any guidance as to what to buy? What do you guys wear in winter?

All of your inputs will be enormously appreciated :-)

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!

  • What I do to keep warm in the frosty Canadian winters is...

layer 1-first a tank top or baselong sleeve. These are usually tight fitting (something like spandexy or that lululemon silverescent fabric) I like the lululemon run swiftly long tech. Basically you want a technical moisture wicking base. Lululemon is CRAZY expensive. But it is generally good fitting and high performing.

layer 2- Then ontop I'll wear depending on how cold a sweatshirt (just a normal sweatshirt) or a pullover type of performance top ex http://https://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=is...

layer 3-and then I wear a light but wind resistant layer a light spring jacket, or a lot of shops will sell running jackets. It just depends on how cold it is in your area exactly but the wind resistance is key!

Then some gloves and you`re good to go!

As far as pants I'll sometimes wear tights and then a wind resistant pair of 'splash pants" on top, heck MOST times I'll just wear yoga pants. I have one pair of goretex pants I bought before hiking in the mountains, I'll only use those if it's truly freezing!

  • running/compression tights are key.  and at least a long sleeve.  i usually google what to wear running 40's and it usually tells me. :)

  • I love cuddlduds!
    • What is cuddlduds?

    • Cuddlduds are layering undergarments. They work well for sports sleeping in and wearing under everyday clothes. I lived in Wisconsin one winter and I needed these to survive haha
    • I see, that's not specific for running, is it? Thanks!

  • I also wear compression tights. I prefer the winter weight ones that have the brushed cotton on the inside. I have several under armor winter weight cold weather gear compression tops which I wear as a base layer. I also have a Cooke of jackets in bright colors for layering. I highly recommend wool running socks like smartwool. My favorite running jacket has a hood that I can cinch up tight to keep my ears warm. I got it on the runningskirts.com website. They also have some super cute winter weight running tights with the sown on skirts. Love them! Gloves are important. Nothing too fancy. I prefer microfiber gloves so I can wipe my nose without scratching my face. I also have a neck warmer thing that I can pull up over my nose on super cold, windy days. Happy running!

    • Thanks for all the info and the photo! I dont think I'll recognize you lol

  • Hi!

I wear compression tights, They are not very long so I use long socks suitable for running. A long sleeved T-shirt for running and a wind jacket. Ofcourse a good bra as a woman. Underwears with no cotton.

When it is realy cold  I use a knitted hat and knitted gloves too.

In Sweden is it very dark so we use a lot of reflexes (Same word in English??)

    Specially If running on roads.

    Good luck!

    • Wilmaz,

      Compression tights sounds smart.

In English it is  Reflectors or reflective garments . I layer thin shirts made of  some hi tech material --  a tip on layering --buy different sizes, because even in freezing weather you don't want to be bundled tight, you want air flow -- so buying three small shirts and layering them will be uncomfortable and cold/ damp. The sport shops usually sell underwear (and long underwear like tights) in a breathable material, but also keep you warm. I have a balaklava with a breathing mesh area that works really well on snowy or sleeting days-- my face never freezes. I just buy everything at Paragon or EMS or Campmor, because they stock the inovative clothing & I can buy all vegan stuff. Pricey sometimes but it lasts forever, so it's a good investment.
