  • Hi Sophia. Thats cool i dont mind trying to answer questions :) Its been a year though since i was at the farm so things have quite possibly changed, so its best to check with Barb on specifics, especially the internet and work set up. When i was there though i was able to use the internet for a small charge for each day that i wanted to use it. We worked weekday mornings, so had afternoons and weekends free to do whatever we wanted. And yeh the community is 80/10/10 raw vegan, but outside the farm you can eat cooked food if you like. Most people wont, but people will not think anything less of u, everyone is on their own journey, so dont worry about that. The community are very lovely, they just want to make sure that ON the farm the environment fully supports optimum health in line with being 80/10/10 raw vegan.

Er...typical day...wake up to beautiful sunshine and nature, go and have breaky in the kitchen where usually everyone else is too, all tend to the farm for the morning (harvesting fruit, planting seeds, clearing banana plants etc etc.), chat about farm over lunch, then cycle to hotponds with few ppl and relax there for some time, then head back before dark, have dinner, read in bed, sleep.

    Hope that helps lol :)

  • Hi Raychil! I'm wondering if you can tell me more about the communication methods used at Kanekiki that Barb mentioned to me in an email. And how would the rest of the community feel if I ate cooked vegan foods outside the farm? How much free time do you get for yourself once you've finished all the work for the day? Can you give me an example of a day in the life at Kanekiki? Sorry for all the questions :)

  • SOUND LIKES A DREAM! SIGN ME UP

  • Hi Barb! I just sent you an email requesting an application to come help out and be a part of the beautiful community at Kanekiki. It looks and sounds like a dream, and I'm more than willing to get my hands dirty with a smile on my face in order to fully experience what the Big Island has to offer a raw vegan! Can't wait to hear back from you :) Mahalo!

  • I am doing my permaculture certificate on the big island come February.  I finish February 28th and would love to intern on the farm.

  • I would love to check it out ;)
  • I went last year and it was amazing!!

Kanekiki is a beautiful fruit farm, with wooden huts to sleep in, and a big shared open kitchen with showers in the garden.  It's such a tranquil place, and close to the sea, thermal ponds, beaches and local farmers markets.

I ate the most amazing fruit of my life; jackfruit, rollinia, rambutan, mamey, soursop, papaya, citrus, durian and so much more.  I learnt how to climb a coconut tree, open a coconut with a machete, and got to drink loads of fresh coconut juice.  I also learnt tons about natural farming, fruit trees, living in a community etc. etc.

I got to do loads of other cool stuff on the island; cycling and camping at the Volcano Park, seeing Kilauea Volcano erupt at night, watching the sun set from the top of Mauna Kea, staring down into Waipio Valley, swimming with wild dolphins...

The Kanekiki community really quickly felt like family, like it was home.  I had so much fun with everyone, and they all taught me so much.  The wider Puna community is also great, full of really fun and interesting big-hearted people.

It was so nice waking up with the sun, amongst the nature, and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and coqui frogs. To experience really simple living, off grid…

I'm making plans to go back now, and I can't wait to go back!

If anyone wants to ask me anything about it ... go for it :)

  • hmm don't know if it's possible anymore, have sent them an email about 10 days ago and didn't get a reply so far..

  • i would love to go

  • I'm definitely interested in a Tropical Island Internship where do I get all the details?
