How to ripen pineapples!

Hi I just wanted to share some tips on ripening pineapples! I live in here in Los Angeles, and I can't find fresh, ripe, orgainc pineapples anywhere they are always very green. So don't hesitate to buy the super green unripe pineapples. All you need to do is turn them upside down and wait until all the green turns either yellow or brown or even black. Don't rush it, it takes well over a week. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other tips on ripening your pineapples! 8191687276?profile=original8191686884?profile=original

  • Hey Weston, you live in LA? Come to the fruitluck tomorrow.

  • i here that tropical fruits work best for me to  your method sounds great doing the best we can with the fruits as they are not as i would like them to be

  • Totally! I noticed that if I laid them on their side, or upside down they would eventually ripen to a good state. If I left them right side (wrong side) up, they would get all moldy before they were ready to eat.

I tend to buy them as ripe as possible from the store, but they really do continue to get sweeter with time. Maybe it's bacteria or something, doing the work?

  • i think its another sad case of wonderful fruit picked green and totally unripe for economic gains of shelf life .

would they not turn golden then you pick them in an ideal world

i submit these are not like avocado or pears or bananas that ripen off of the stem these ripen like a cherry or grape strawberry need to be picked ripe ...

i have given up on them unless in tropics i have not see green pineapples in tropics for sale  always golden at market  only in usa are they green

  • A pineapple will not ripen once it has been picked ( as in the sugar content will not go up ) but the colour can change a bit. They can become softer then will begin to decay.

    • From personal experience, I find this to not be true. I've eaten pineapples straight from the store when they're still hard.. and they're much more acidic! After waiting about a week, they become softer and taste less acid with more of a sweet flavor.

      • You can check anywhere on the internet and a friend of mine was harvesting them in Queensland Australia. Once picked the sugar content (ripening process) ceases to rise. The sugar comes from starch in the stem the fruit grows on unlike other fruits once it is removed from the stem no more sugar will be produced, they will just become soft as they are breaking down.

        • yep, they merely go from unripe to rotted, not a good food to eat unless you are living where they are grown.  I remember one lady who was eating tons of pineapple and because it caused burning in her mouth she thought she was smart to put the pineapple in a smoothie and eat it that way, she did pineapple islands this way and continued doing this for months and then could not figure out why she still had digestive issues.  :P

  • This is awesome, thanks so much for the info!!
  • Are they even safe to eat? I've read somewhere that it's best to not eat a lot of them, because they will probably never ripen completely. (tropics=exception) How's your experience.
