Is anyone here into Polyphasic sleeping?

I have been interested in polyphasic sleep for a few years (haven't tried it yet though).  My friend, who is a raw vegan bodybuilder, was doing it with great results for a year or two last time I talked to him.

Polyphasic sleep is believed by some to by the ancestral sleep state (most animals do it) - more time spent awake during the 24-hour period, with evenly spaced naps.  Spending as much as 20 hours a wake, but improving the quality and type of sleep so that the naps are actually even MORE effective than one block of sleep per 24hrs.

I've read some blogs of people who are doing it, who say that it causes a major shift in consciousness (increased), plus a better quality of life - more joy, more energy, plus not to mention the obvious - an extra 40 hrs a week of awake time, and the possibilities that implies.

I also noticed that the longer I have been 811, the more effective my naps are, and that my muscles can make major recovery from sometimes just a short nap.

Just curious if peeps here, who I know to be attracted to experiencing the best out of life, are also into this.

  • Dr. Graham talks about sleep being required to replenish 'nerve energy'. Is that what dreamless sleep is for??? Or is that what REM sleep is for?
Also, can you get your body it's recovery time without actually being asleep, such as laying down in savasana?
  • great, keep going. Really exiting to see after a week or two etc on the progress in terms of sports, mental stuff etc
  • not sure if i should try this or not...i'll have to sleep on it :P

wow, i'm full of awful puns tonight.

  • i have also been really intersted in trying it but never got around to it since i havent heard of many long term doers.
  • Me too!  :)

  • Very interesting, I read the 90 day update.  I have certainly experienced a 20 minute nap being completely rejuvenating and taking regular naps in the afternoon and needing less sleep when doing regular 2 hours of meditation daily.  Sleep is an interesting phenomena indeed.

I have always thought that a public napping area should be available.

  • Which sleep pattern will you be trying? The uberman one or the dymaxion?
    • I'm going for Uberman.  I haven't heard too much about dymaxion.
      • Good luck! I have been wanting to try it for ages, I just don't know how it will interfere with my meditation practice though. Like if my meditation practice rejuvenates me then I may not be able to fall asleep in the correct intervals.
        • Ha, I had the same concern!  But I think eventually your body will adjust and realize it needs the sleep because you're not getting a whole night's worth later on.  Or... maybe your meditation will replace that one nap period.
