Persimmon's skins

So it's winter here, and I've been enjoying the yummiest persimmons. They're on the top of my favorites fruits ever, and I can get them VERY cheap here (between $1.5 - $2.5 / kilo).

I eat them whole, like an apple, but I heard something that it's not good to eat their skins, or at least not if you eat a lot of them (and I do!).

What's your opinion about that? Is it okay to eat all of them whole? How do you eat them?

  • 2. Urban Truth: Eating persimmons can cause blockages, even in healthy people.

Persimmons are a beautiful coral-colored fruit that resemble tomatoes in appearance. They are more common in Asian diets than typical Western ones, though persimmon pudding is a regional treat popular in the Midwest.

Oddly, unripe persimmons contain a natural compound that can form a glue-like substance when combined with acid (such as stomach acid); the hard masses that result are reportedly the leading cause of plant-related bezoars globally! Unlike a typical phytobezoar, which is far more likely to affect someone with an underlying medical condition like gastroparesis, persimmon bezoars can affect healthy people with normal digestive function as well.

They are so common, in fact, that there is a special medical term dedicated entirely to them: diospyrobezoars. An even more interesting piece of obstruction-related trivia: Coca-Cola is not nearly as effective at dissolving persimmon bezoars because they are generally much harder than the standard, run-of-the-mill phytobezoar made of regular old plant fibers.

  • For me, it entirely depends on how tender the skin is. It seems to vary allot.

  • I don't eat the skins.  The skins seem dirty, and I don't find them appetizing.

  • I get them for 1 euro for two kg´s or two euros for three. So it´s around 1,37$ per kilo! gotta love Spain!

I try not to eat skins, because fruit´s been exposed to all kinds of things and hands, pollution from the streets, and it usually has white, greyish dust or stain *or something* on it, so I try to take it off.

My bet is I´m eating 1/3 of the skins, because they´re usually so ripe I can´t *peel it*

    • Hey Moonwalker where in spain are you? Wherever you are those prices sound great! When I was in Barcelona fruit didn't seem that cheap.

  • The persimmons that I eat are the fuyus, if I'm not mistaken.

And both the skin and the inside are equally yummy, so I would hate not to eat them whole.

Maybe people who don't like persimmons very much is because they are getting bad quality ones. I eat local persimmons and each one of them is fantastic.

  • Personally they are like eating wax, but i don't like persimmons either. The moral is if you don't mind them eat them, otherwise leave them alone.

    • If they seem like wax, they're probably under-ripe.  Are they hard?   Some will get very soft like plums.

But persimmons are the only fruit I think taste better under-ripe.

      • I just meant the skins remind me of wax. I should have been more specific sorry :D

  • Love persimmons. I eat a ton of fuyu persimmons because I'm lucky enough to pick them from my grandmas back yard. Personally- I never eat the skin and I like to eat them soft, not crisp... That's when they are the sweetest and have the most flavor.

I don't think the skins are harmful, but a waist of digestive effort and room in my belly IMO.
