  • Hi everybody! I am new to this 30 bad lifestyle, and new to this site. My family and I have been transitioning to a vegan over the past month and it seems to be going very well. I have a 7 year old daughter, so I joined this group to learn from others who are the kind of parent that I aspire to be, and who role model the lifestyle that my family and I are moving towards!

  • Please check out my YouTube channel people, could do with some support and advice. Another video going up as we speak on healthy vegan snacks for children, how to get them to eat a variety of foods and mostly enjoy it! Any ideas or questions parents on this lifestyle may have i will gladly answer or make a video out of!

  • wow thank you so much for you fast replies :)
The video was very informational Pixie, thank you!
Great White North, my sons is luckily not very picky at all. He likes both hemp milk, nut milk, coconut milk, and sesame milk, but I'm just not sure that it would be okay to stop with the formula and substitute it with these types of "milk" when it comes to nutrition, but on the other hand formula isn't optimal when it comes to nutrition anyways and the cow milk protein in it is just bad, so I figure he gets the vitamins from the fruits and greens, and there is fat and minerals in the seed/nut milk and also the fatty fruits I give him, so it couldn't be all bad..... I don't know.
Mary TG yes the best thing would definitely be breast milk but unfortunately my sons stopped nursing when he was 2 months and now he's 8 months so I'd stopped producing milk and I'm now struggling to start producing again but it's a really slow affair ESPECIALLY because my son "isn't helping". It would really get things going if he started to suckle but so far (4 weeks since started) no luck, so right now I wouldn't even be able to fill a shot glass even if I worked on it all day. I have contacted The LLL and they have been very helpful with advice, but I'm not able to use a pump - tried both mechanical and manual and it's just not working (didn't even work when I was producing milk, that's why I weren't able to keep him on breast milk).

  • This might be a good video to watch on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzVj9QzEdWQ

  • Vicki,

We had the dreaded formula situation as well (started before we found out about 811). At about one year old we had our son switched over to Hemp milk.

    1 tablespoon hemp seeds

    2 dates

    1 cup water

Blend in a high speed blender.

My son likes to drink it warm which is a problem when we are traveling. It doesn't last too long without refrigeration. I'm not sure when is too early to start though...we started mixing formula and hemp milk to get him used to the taste. I thought it would be a long process to switch him over because he is a very picky eater. But after a week I got tired of mixing and the formula can was empty. So at that point we just switched to full strength and its worked out great. He is three now and "addicted" to hemp milk  :)

  • Vicki, can you pump breastmilk?  It seems that would be ideal.  If you contact a local La Leche League they may be able to hook you up  (literally :)) with a  good pump.  If he is unable to latch then he can drink from a cup/sippy cup, no?  How long has it been since he nursed?

  • Hi everyone.

I'm new here and I can't quite seem to figure out how to work my way around this site, so if this has been discussed (probably has!) before, just please kindly guide med towards the information:) I have an 8 month old son who unfortunately is on formula ( feel like I feed him pure poison every time I give it to him). I'm trying to re-lactate BUT it's a mighty slow progress and I don't know if I'll actually be able to get him to latch on. But I'm trying to figure out what to feed him. He'll literally eat anything and I have yet to come across a fruit he does not like. I'm vegan, boyfriend is not, but as for our sons diet, I have the better argument, so he doesn't get any animal products including dairy products (except the damn formula - is there ANYTHING else I can give him????) I've ben told that HCRV diets aren't suitable for small children because they need more fat in their diet, so how much is enough?? I'm currently reading the 80/10/10 diet by Dr. Graham and I'm really finding it hard to understand why babies need more fat, if the fat is SO bad and causes SO many problems in the body??! If i give him avocado in the evening and bananas (or any other fruit) the next morning, that would cause blood sugar issues in adults, so why not in children?? Also I've given him coconut and nut milk (home made) but is that a no go?? I've been trying to figure out if I can substitute the formula with something, and what he gets from it is fat, protein, vitamins and minerals, so in my head, he'll get the same from nut milk, avocado and a lot of different fruits, but I really don't wanna do anything damaging. So what the heck should I do?? He's been eating solids since he was 3 months, so he's used to it. He's diet is fruit and veggies (the veggies steamed) and I've also made some bread from seeds and nuts, but looking in his diaper the morning after he's eaten it, it doesn't seem like he's really digesting them, and after reading the book, I'm curious as to if he's even able too.
If anyone can help me, PLEASE let me know, because I really wanna do what's best for him.

    Thanks

Thoughts on Vaccines?

I just found out my midwife will likely want me to get the whooping cough vaccine during my pregnancy. I do not at all like the idea of vaccines and have heard some bad stuff about them. At the same time though, I in no way would ever want to endanger my baby by not protecting her against those kinds of viruses.Could Ya'll let me know what your stance is, your experience with vaccinating or not vaccinating your children, and/or some credible reading on the topic? I am honestly torn and not sure…
