Juicing to make up cals

Hi guys

I am new to raw food and am trying to follow 80/10/10.  I need some advice please.

Like many new 811ers I am struggling to get enough carbs/cals each and every day.  And as we all know this is bad news as the cooked food cravings start.  And unfortunately I have been giving into them.  I definitely find it helps if I get a big fruit meal in early in the day.  But even still I often find my cals for the day are around the 1000/1500 mark.  Recently I have been drinking freshly juiced orange juice in between my meals, to bring up the cals.  But I have read that juicing is a no no on a 811 diet.

Here is where I need some advice.  Firstly do any of you juice at all?  I am trying to make the best choice and avoid as much cooked food as possible.  Is adding juicing a better option for me right now, knowing that I am working on increasing my fruit eating cals? I have M.E. and I don’t want to do something that is going to make me worse.  And I know that cooked food really affects my M.E. symptoms.  My fear is that this is where the too much sugar in fruit quotes come from.  Am I making things worse?

Any advice welcomed.

Zoe

  • Hi Zoe, I don't know much about m.e., but I understand that you don't want low blood sugar, so eating lots of fruit shouldn't be a problem. I'm new too and I'm just gearing up. I started by buying a bunch of bananas each for the last 4 days and the first bunch hasn't even gotten ripe yet so I'm not quite ready to start. I've also bought a supply of dates and am making a fruit and vegetable smoothie (banana, apple, kiwi, raisins, berries, pomegranate juice, broccoli, beet, kale, carrot, red cabbage and water) and I have a green evenings. I think that and a few nuts and flax in the smoothie should be enough. Best of luckalways.

  • i struggled with getting enough cals in the beginning, because my stomach was so shrunk from calorie restricting for months.  I started with 5 blended bananas at a time, and i would force myself to eat more even if i was full.  Once i wasnt over full, 5 more bananas.  Im up to 10 banana smoothies with a few dates in it, 2 times a day, then i usually have a big salad type meal at the end of the day (latley its been all fruit because of work schedule).  SMOOTHIES are the best way to get cals in IMO.  i get full if i have 4 or 5 bananas just how they are, smoothie form is easier, try it out! and make sure ur getting a lot of water! helps with the digestion :)  i started this 811rv journey 37 days ago
    • Thanks.  Good advice.  I shall sneek in an extra banana into my smoothie.

Well done on your raw journey.  37 days in are you feeling better in your self?  Have you noticed an improvement in energy?  Did you jump in to 811 fully straight away or did you slowly transision off cooked food?

  • I juice oranges a lot, and I think many people on here do since you don't lose the fiber when you juice them. To my knowledge, that's the only fruit you can juice and still retain the fiber, which is the big deal behind not juicing.

You can juice some greens, as well, which makes eating a pound of them a whole lot easier :)

    • Thanks.  Good to know that I am OK with OJ.
    • Yep O.J. is an awesome easy way to get those calories up, just make sure you leave the pulp in the juice.

Here is Dr. Doug's stance on juicing and why it doesn't do a body good.  If I was going to juice greens, I would add it to my smoothie or eat bananas along with it.

Is it okay to juice fruits and vegetables?

With a few exceptions, it is preferable to consume the whole food rather than to extract part of it and drink it. Drinking fruit or carrot juice without the pulp being present to slow the absorption rate of the nutrients can spike the blood sugar and throw your blood chemistry out of balance. It is far better to consume the whole fruit. One exception is fresh-squeezed citrus fruits, since a significant portion of the pulp is generally retained with the juice. The other "exceptions" are to blend fruits such as melons, and to make smoothies out of various fruits like bananas and strawberries. Liquefying the entire fruit in a blender turns it into a juice or a thick smoothie, while keeping the entire nutritional package together. Blending whole tomato, celery and orange together makes a thick, tasty, salad dressing.

      P.S. Have you tried datorade?

    • Thanks for your advice.  I am so glad OJ is OK.  Will try some smoothies and datorade too.
